
Meet the Doctors

Edwin DeJesus, MD, FACP
Dr DeJesus is a graduate from the University of Puerto Rico, School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine training and Infectious Disease fellowship at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and is board certified in Infectious Diseases. He has been a Fellow of the American College of Physicians since 1996.
Dr DeJesus is the Medical Director for the Orlando Immunology Center in downtown-Orlando and maintains a secondary office with Infectious Disease Consultants (IDC) in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
Since 1993, Dr DeJesus has devoted most of his time caring for HIV and hepatitis infected patients. He is the Principal Investigator for the OIC Research Facility, where he oversees the conduction of several phase I-IV clinical trials. In this capacity, he has presented several study results in major international conferences such as AIDS World Conference, International AIDS Society Conference, Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and The Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.
Dr DeJesus has remained highly active in the Florida HIV Hispanic Community where he has implemented and supported educational, preventative, and research programs. He has participated as a guest speaker for community programs, medical forums and as part of the HIV and ID training of physicians in medical centers around the country. Dr DeJesus serves as a consultant to many pharmaceutical companies including: Glaxo-SmithKline, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck, Vertex, Gilead Science and Tibotec.

Roberto Ortiz, MD
Dr Roberto Ortiz is a graduate of the National University of Colombia, where he earned his medical license in 1988. He has been a member of Orlando Immunology Center since its inception in 1999, when it was known as IDC research Initiative. Dr Ortiz has participated as a guest speaker for numerous community programs and is an active supporter of the Cheers for Peers program that provides HIV medication adherence education, counseling and peer support to people living with HIV/AIDS in the community.
At Orlando Immunology Center, Dr Ortiz runs the Anal Dysplasia Clinic, where he uses anal pap screening and High Resolution Anascopy to identify and treat patients with precancerous lesions. Dr Ortiz also offers Sculptra procedures to patients who are suffering from facial fat wasting (lipoatrophy).
Dr Ortiz is very active in research as both a primary investigator and a sub investigator for clinical trials. He is certified as an HIV Specialist through the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM) and serves as a consultant to Bristol-Myers Squibb, Gilead, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Tibotec and Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

Gerald Horton, MD
Dr Jerry Horton, originally from Jacksonville, Fl., received his degree in medicine from the University of Florida in 1983. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and then entered into private practice. While practicing family medicine in Jacksonville, he became involved in HIV/AIDS care as one of the first wave of providers and clinical researchers as the HIV epidemic moved into the Southeastern United States.
Over the last decade, Dr Horton has continued his involvement with HIV/AIDS as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida at Shands in Jacksonville and while working for one of the leading HIV pharmaceutical companies. He returned to clinical medicine in 2007 and joined Orlando Immunology Center in 2008.
Dr Horton participates as a sub-investigator for many trials at Orlando Immunology Center. As a board certified family physician, Dr Horton is able to provide primary care, integrating a broader scope of comprehensive healthcare for our patients at OIC.

Federico Hinestrosa, MD
Dr Hinestrosa received his medical degree in 1997, from the Instituto de Ciencias de la Salud in Medellin, Colombia. He completed his Internal Medicine training at Geisinger Medical Center of Pennsylvania, and his Infectious Disease Fellowship at Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC. As part of his medical education, he conducted medical research and participated in the publication and presentation of several studies.
Since joining Orlando Immunology Center in 2009, Dr Hinestrosa has been active in research as a sub investigator for clinical trials. He is a member of the International Society for Infectious Diseases, The Infectious Disease Society of America and the American College of Physicians. He is also a board certified member of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
